Insurgency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

16 March 2004

The insurgency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a long conflict between the Pakistani state and militant groups, mostly in the northwest of Pakistan along the border with Afghanistan. It grew out of the spillover of the war in Afghanistan after 2001, when militants and foreign fighters took refuge in the tribal areas, and Pakistani troops entered the region for the first time in strength. The movement coalesced into the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, which carried out bombings and attacks on soldiers, police, schools and civilians, including the Peshawar school attack of 2014. The army conducted several major offensives, such as Operation Zarb-e-Azb, and large numbers of people were displaced. Violence declined for a time, but later increased again.
