Creation of Deepin

28 February 2004

Deepin is a Linux distribution developed in China, based on Debian and known for a polished desktop environment of its own design. It began in 2004 under the name Hiweed Linux and later became Linux Deepin and then simply Deepin, with Wuhan Deepin Technology as its main developer. Its Deepin Desktop Environment, with a distinctive launcher, dock and control center, is also used by other Linux distributions, and the project created a number of applications such as a software store and music and video players. Deepin attracted many users outside China for its looks and ease of use, though it also drew some concerns over privacy and the handling of its development. It is one of the best-known Chinese contributions to open-source desktop software.
