Hundred Hour War

from 14 July 1969 to 18 July 1969

The Hundred Hour War, also known as the Football War, was a short armed conflict between El Salvador and Honduras. Its roots lay in tensions over land, immigration and trade, as many poor Salvadorans had moved to Honduras and faced pressure to leave after a land reform law. The tension was inflamed by riots during qualifying matches for the 1970 football World Cup between the two countries. El Salvador invaded Honduras, and the Organization of American States arranged a ceasefire. Salvadoran troops withdrew some weeks later. Thousands of people died, many of them civilians, and many Salvadorans were expelled from Honduras. The war damaged the Central American Common Market, and the border dispute was settled later by the International Court of Justice.
