Founding of Andean Community

26 May 1969

The Andean Community is a regional trade and integration organization in South America, which began as the Andean Pact when five countries signed the Cartagena Agreement. Its founding members were Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, with Venezuela joining a few years later. Chile left in the 1970s because of disagreements over foreign investment rules, and Venezuela withdrew in 2006, after Colombia and Peru signed trade deals with the United States. The organization has created a free trade area among its members, a common external tariff for a time, a parliament, and measures such as a common passport format. It is headquartered in Lima, Peru, and its aims include political and economic cooperation.
