Death of Ho Chi Minh

2 September 1969

Ho Chi Minh died on 2 September 1969 in Hanoi, aged 79. A Vietnamese communist revolutionary, Ho Chi Minh was born Nguyen Sinh Cung and spent decades abroad, working in France, the Soviet Union and China, before leading the movement for Vietnamese independence from French rule. He founded the Indochinese Communist Party in 1930 and the Viet Minh in 1941, and in September 1945 he declared Vietnam's independence. He led the resistance in the First Indochina War, which ended with the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, after which he became the president of North Vietnam. He guided the north during the Vietnam War but died before the country's reunification, and Saigon was later renamed Ho Chi Minh City in his honour.
