Heysel Stadium disaster

29 May 1985

The Heysel Stadium disaster occurred before the 1985 European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus in Brussels. Fighting between supporters led to a charge of Liverpool fans on a section of the ground with mostly Juventus supporters, who were crushed against a wall, which collapsed. Thirty-nine people died, most of them Italians, and hundreds were injured. The match was played afterwards, in an attempt to avoid more violence, with Juventus winning 1-0. The disaster shocked Europe, and English clubs were banned from European competitions for five years, longer in Liverpool's case. Several Liverpool fans were convicted of involuntary manslaughter. It brought lasting changes to the safety and policing of football stadiums.
