Construction of Soekarno Hatta International Airport

1 May 1985

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is the main airport serving Jakarta, though it lies in the neighbouring city of Tangerang in Banten province. It opened in the mid-1980s to replace the old Kemayoran airport, which had become too small and was surrounded by the growing city. The airport is named after Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, and its first vice president, Mohammad Hatta, who together proclaimed independence in 1945. Its terminals were designed with roofs inspired by traditional Indonesian architecture, set among tropical gardens. It is the busiest airport in Indonesia and a major hub for Garuda Indonesia, and it has been expanded repeatedly to cope with rapid growth in air travel.
