The October 7 attacks were a coordinated assault on southern Israel by Hamas and other armed groups from the Gaza Strip, who broke through the border fence and attacked military posts, towns and kibbutzim and a music festival near Re'im. About 1,200 people were killed, most of them civilians, and around 250 were taken hostage into Gaza, making it the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. Israel declared war on Hamas and launched an air and ground campaign in Gaza, which caused a very high number of deaths and a severe humanitarian crisis. The attacks and the war that followed had wide effects across the Middle East, and led to cases in international courts.
