The Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, on the slopes of Mount Aragats in Armenia, was established by the astrophysicist Viktor Ambartsumian, who became its first director, and it grew into one of the main astronomical centres of the Soviet Union. Ambartsumian worked there on the theory of stellar associations, and the observatory became known for surveys of galaxies, including the Markarian survey, which catalogued galaxies with strong ultraviolet emission. It also hosted many international conferences. Its telescopes include a 2.6-metre reflector installed in the 1970s. The observatory remains the principal astronomical institution in Armenia.
