Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman died on 21 November 1970 in Bengaluru, aged 82. An Indian physicist, Raman was born in southern India and began his career as a government finance officer in Calcutta, while conducting research in his spare time at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science. In 1928 he discovered that light scattered by a transparent material changes wavelength in a way that reveals the molecular structure of the substance, an effect now called the Raman effect. For this he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, the first Asian to win a Nobel in the sciences. He later directed the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and founded the Raman Research Institute. India marks National Science Day on 28 February to commemorate his discovery.
