Founding of University of London

1836

The University of London is a federal university that includes many of the best-known higher education institutions of the city. It was established by royal charter in 1836 as an examining body, which could award degrees to the students of University College London and King's College London, since the ancient English universities at that time admitted only members of the Church of England. Later it opened its examinations to students anywhere, and its external system enabled many people in Britain and across the empire to take degrees without attending classes in London. In 1878 it became the first British university to admit women to degrees. Its member institutions have included the London School of Economics and Imperial College.
