Construction of Arc de Triomphe

29 July 1836

The Arc de Triomphe is a monument at the western end of the Champs-Elysees in Paris, standing at the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle. It was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz, to honor the French armies, and was designed by Jean Chalgrin. Construction was slow and halted after Napoleon's fall, and it was finished under King Louis-Philippe and inaugurated on 29 July 1836. Its sides are carved with sculptures, and its walls carry the names of generals and battles of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Since 1921 it has sheltered the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the First World War, with an eternal flame.
