Republic of Texas

from 2 March 1836 to 19 February 1846

The Republic of Texas was an independent state in North America, created when American settlers and Tejanos in the Mexican province of Texas declared independence from Mexico. The Texas Revolution had begun the previous year, and after the fall of the Alamo and the Goliad massacre, Sam Houston's army defeated the Mexican general Santa Anna at San Jacinto in April 1836. Houston became the republic's president, and the capital was later established at Austin. Mexico never recognised its independence, but the United States, France and Britain did. The republic struggled with debt and the threat of Mexican invasion, and many of its citizens favoured joining the United States. Annexation took place in 1845, and Texas became a state in 1846, leading to the Mexican-American War.
