Founding of United Nations Population Fund

1969

The United Nations Population Fund, known as UNFPA, is the United Nations agency that deals with sexual and reproductive health and population questions. It began operating in the late 1960s as a trust fund and became a full agency in the 1980s. It supports family planning, maternal health care, the prevention of child marriage and violence against women, and the collection of census data. UNFPA is funded by voluntary contributions from governments, and its work in some areas has been controversial, particularly over abortion and family planning policy. Its headquarters are in New York.
