Establishment of Simien Mountains National Park

1969

Simien Mountains National Park is a protected area in the highlands of northern Ethiopia, in the Amhara region. It is a landscape of dramatic escarpments, deep valleys and jagged peaks, some of the highest in the country. The park shelters rare animals, including the gelada, a grass-eating monkey found only in Ethiopia, the Walia ibex, which lives nowhere else, and the Ethiopian wolf, one of the rarest canids in the world. It was one of the first sites placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and was listed as in danger for years because of a decline in the numbers of wildlife and growing human pressure, before being removed from that list. Trekking attracts many visitors to the park.
