Construction of Melilla Airport

1969

Melilla Airport serves Melilla, a Spanish city on the north coast of Africa, surrounded by Morocco. It is a small airport that opened in the late 1960s and is mainly used for flights to mainland Spain, such as to Málaga and Madrid. The city is one of two Spanish enclaves in North Africa, together with Ceuta, and an air link is important because of the border with Morocco and the sea crossing otherwise needed. It is operated by the Spanish airport authority, Aena.
