Founding of United Nations Industrial Development Organization

1966

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization, or UNIDO, is a United Nations agency that promotes industrial development in poorer countries. The General Assembly created it in the mid-1960s, and it became a specialised agency of the UN system in the 1980s, with its headquarters at the Vienna International Centre. UNIDO helps governments with technical advice and projects in areas such as manufacturing, energy efficiency, trade capacity and environmental technologies. Its stated aim is inclusive and sustainable industrial development, linked to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Most countries of the world are members, and it works through offices in many regions.
