Construction of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

1966

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power station on the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture in northern Japan, run by the Tokyo Electric Power Company. Work on the site began in the 1960s, and the first of its boiling water reactors started commercial operation in the early 1970s. Six reactors were eventually built on the site. In March 2011 a massive earthquake and the tsunami that followed cut off the plant's power and cooling, leading to meltdowns in three reactors and the release of radioactive material. It was one of the worst nuclear accidents in history, and the decommissioning of the plant is expected to take several decades.
