Founding of Suzuki Motor Corporation

10 February 1909

Suzuki Motor Corporation is a Japanese manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles and outboard motors, based in Hamamatsu. It was founded by Michio Suzuki as Suzuki Loom Works, making looms for the local silk-weaving industry. It turned to motor vehicles in the 1930s and began producing motorcycles in the early 1950s with a motorized bicycle, followed by its first car, the Suzulight, in 1955. The company became a leader in kei cars, the small vehicles favored in Japan, and in small cars such as the Swift and the Jimny. Its partnership with Maruti in India, begun in the 1980s, produced the Maruti 800, which transformed the Indian car market.
