Founding of Sunderland A.F.C.

1879

Sunderland A.F.C. is an English football club from the city of Sunderland in the northeast of England, founded by a schoolteacher, James Allan, and other teachers as a club for teachers. It became one of the leading sides of the Victorian era, winning the league title six times before the Second World War. Its fans are known as the Mackems, and the club is nicknamed the Black Cats. Sunderland won the FA Cup in 1937 and again in 1973, when the second-division side beat Leeds United in one of the greatest upsets in the competition's history. The club left Roker Park for the Stadium of Light in 1997, and has moved between the top divisions since.
