Derby Museum and Art Gallery in the English city of Derby was opened in the late 19th century, funded by the local industrialist Michael Thomas Bass. It houses collections on local history, archaeology, natural history and the arts. It is best known for its holdings of paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby, the 18th-century painter famous for his dramatic candlelit scenes of scientific experiments, and it holds the largest collection of his work in the world. The museum also has displays of Derby porcelain, which was made in the city, and of local Roman and medieval finds. It remains a free public museum run by the city council.
