Founding of Sporting CP

1 July 1906

Sporting Clube de Portugal, usually known as Sporting CP, is one of the three big clubs of Portugal, based in Lisbon and nicknamed the Lions, with a green and white kit. It was founded in the early twentieth century, with the backing of the Viscount of Alvalade's family, and the name of its stadium, the Estádio José Alvalade, remembers the man who led its creation. Sporting is a multi-sport club, with sections in athletics, futsal, handball and other sports. It has won the Portuguese league many times, and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1964. Its academy has produced international stars, among them Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo, and its rivalry with Benfica is one of the fiercest in the country.
