Kurt Gödel was born on 28 April 1906 in Brno. An Austrian-born logician and mathematician, Godel proved in 1931 his two incompleteness theorems, which showed that in any consistent formal system capable of expressing basic arithmetic there are true statements that cannot be proved within the system, and that such a system cannot prove its own consistency. The results ended the hope of finding a complete and provably consistent foundation for mathematics, as David Hilbert had proposed. He also showed that the continuum hypothesis is consistent with standard set theory. He emigrated to the United States and worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he was a close friend of Einstein.
