Rise of Haqqani network

1980

The Haqqani network is an Afghan militant group founded by Jalaluddin Haqqani, a commander who fought the Soviet occupation in the 1980s from bases in the eastern provinces and across the border in Pakistan. During that war it received support from Pakistan's intelligence service and, indirectly, from the United States and Arab donors. Later it allied with the Taliban, whose government Jalaluddin joined in the 1990s, and it was blamed for many attacks on foreign and Afghan targets after the 2001 US-led invasion. The United States designated it a terrorist organisation in 2012. Leadership passed to his son Sirajuddin Haqqani, who became a senior figure and interior minister in the Taliban government that returned to power in 2021.
