Founding of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation

8 December 1985

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation was established at a summit in Dhaka, following an initiative by Bangladesh's president Ziaur Rahman. Its seven founding members were Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan joined in 2007. The organisation has its secretariat in Kathmandu and aims to promote economic growth, social progress and cultural cooperation in the region. It created a South Asian free trade area, but progress has been hampered by tensions between India and Pakistan, and regular summits have stalled since 2016.
