Launch of The Independent

1986

The Independent was founded in London by three former journalists of The Daily Telegraph, Andreas Whittam Smith, Stephen Glover and Matthew Symonds, who wanted a quality newspaper free of owner or party influence. It quickly won readers with its clear design and its pledge of independence, and its first slogan declared it would be free, rational and agnostic about political parties. In the early 2000s it changed from broadsheet to a compact format. After years of falling print sales, the paper stopped publishing a print edition in 2016 and became a digital-only title. It is now owned by a company controlled by the Lebedev family, and it still publishes news and opinion with a wide international readership online.
