Creation of Windows 1.0

20 November 1985

Windows 1.0 was Microsoft's first graphical operating environment, a shell that ran on top of the text-based MS-DOS rather than a complete operating system. It let users run several programs in tiled, non-overlapping windows and operate them with a mouse, and it included small applications such as a calculator, calendar and a paint program. It was developed in response to the growing interest in graphical interfaces, following Apple's Lisa and Macintosh. The first version was slow, ran on limited hardware and sold only modestly. Windows 2.0 added overlapping windows, but the series became a mass-market success only with Windows 3.0 in 1990.
