Sony began in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, founded by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita in a damaged department store building in Tokyo shortly after the Second World War. The small firm first repaired and built electrical equipment, then developed Japan's first tape recorder and, in the 1950s, transistor radios. It adopted the name Sony in 1958. Its later products included the Trinitron television, the Walkman portable cassette player and, with Philips, the compact disc. Sony also expanded into films and music, and entered video games with the PlayStation in 1994; in 2021 the parent company was renamed Sony Group.
