Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden was born on 30 April 1946 in Haga Palace. King of Sweden since 1973, Carl XVI Gustaf came to the throne at the age of twenty-seven after the death of his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, his father having died in a plane crash when he was an infant. In 1975 a new constitution came into force that removed the monarch's remaining political powers, making his role purely ceremonial. In 1976 he married Silvia Sommerlath, and they have three children, including Crown Princess Victoria, the heir to the throne after a change in succession law that allowed the eldest child to inherit. He has been involved in environmental and scouting causes, and has a dyslexia diagnosis.
