Founding of Federal University of Bahia

8 April 1946

The Federal University of Bahia, known as UFBA, is a public university in Salvador, the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia. It was formally created as the University of Bahia in 1946, bringing together older schools, including the Faculty of Medicine, which dates from the early nineteenth century and was the first medical school in Brazil. It became a federal institution in the 1950s. UFBA is the oldest and largest university in the state and a major center of research and teaching in the Northeast. It has been important in the study of Afro-Brazilian culture, and has given rise to cultural movements, including Tropicalism, through its association with artists and thinkers in Salvador.
