Founding of Reddit

23 June 2005

Reddit is an American social news and discussion website where users submit links, text and images and vote on them, with the most popular posts rising to the front page. It was created by two University of Virginia graduates, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, who started it with funding from the start-up accelerator Y Combinator, and Aaron Swartz joined soon afterward. The site is organised into thousands of communities called subreddits, each with its own moderators and rules, covering subjects from news and science to hobbies and humour. Reddit was bought by the publisher Conde Nast in 2006, later spun off, and went public in 2024. Its communities have been the source of many internet trends.
