Construction of Allianz Arena

30 May 2005

The Allianz Arena is a football stadium in the Frottmaning district of Munich, designed by the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron and opened in 2005. It replaced the Olympic Stadium as the home of Bayern Munich and also hosted TSV 1860 Munich until 2017. The most distinctive feature is its outer shell of inflated translucent panels, which can be lit in red, blue or white depending on the team playing. The stadium hosted games at the 2006 World Cup, a few months after it opened, as well as matches at the 2020 European Championship held in 2021, and it was the venue for the 2012 Champions League final, which Chelsea won on penalties against Bayern.
