Everton Football Club was formed in Liverpool as a team associated with the St Domingo's church, and it took the name Everton from the district in which it was based. It was one of the twelve founding members of the Football League in 1888 and played its early matches at Anfield before a dispute over rent led to a move to Goodison Park in 1892, while the former ground went to the newly formed Liverpool. Everton have won the English league championship nine times and the FA Cup several times, and have spent more seasons in the top division than almost any other English club.
