Our Lady of Fátima

13 May 1917

Our Lady of Fátima is a title of the Virgin Mary, based on reported apparitions to three shepherd children, Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, near the Portuguese village of Fátima. The first reported vision took place in a field called the Cova da Iria, and further appearances were said to follow monthly, culminating in October with an event witnessed by a large crowd and described as the Miracle of the Sun. The Catholic Church authorized the devotion in 1930, and Fátima became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world. The two younger children died in the flu epidemic, and were canonized in 2017, while Lúcia became a nun.
