Founding of International Organization for Standardization

23 February 1947

The International Organization for Standardization was created after delegates from twenty-five countries met in London in 1946 and agreed to form a body that would coordinate and unify industrial standards. It officially began operations in 1947, with its headquarters in Geneva. The short name ISO is not an abbreviation but is taken from the Greek word isos, meaning equal, so it is the same in every language. ISO publishes thousands of standards, from the dimensions of shipping containers and the A4 paper size to quality management in ISO 9001 and environmental management in ISO 14001. Its standards are voluntary but widely adopted, and they make products, trade and technology compatible across borders.
