Founding of European Investment Bank

1958

The European Investment Bank is the lending arm of the European Union, created under the Treaty of Rome in 1957 and starting its work in 1958. Its shareholders are the member states of the Union, and it is based in Luxembourg. It raises money on the capital markets, where it can borrow cheaply because of its strong backing, and lends for projects that support EU policies, such as transport, energy and support for small businesses. Its lending is not limited to the Union, as it also finances projects in neighboring countries and in developing regions. In recent years it has presented itself as the EU's climate bank.
