Lupang Hinirang, meaning Chosen Land, is the national anthem of the Philippines. Its music was composed in 1898 by Julian Felipe, and it was first played at the proclamation of Philippine independence from Spain in June of that year. The original lyrics came from a Spanish-language poem written by the soldier and poet Jose Palma in 1899. The anthem was later sung in English translation under American rule and then in Tagalog versions, and the Filipino lyrics in use today were officially adopted in the twentieth century. It is sung with a patriotic, march-like character at public ceremonies, and its use is regulated by Philippine law.
