Founding of European Court of Auditors

18 October 1977

The European Court of Auditors is the institution that checks the finances of the European Union. Despite its name it is not a court of law: it has no judicial powers, and its task is to examine whether EU money has been collected and spent legally and properly. It was set up under a treaty of 1975 and began work in 1977 in Luxembourg, where it is still based. It has one member from each EU country, and publishes annual and special reports that can highlight waste or fraud. Under the Maastricht Treaty of 1992 it was given the status of a full EU institution.
