We Are the Champions is a rock ballad written by Freddie Mercury and recorded by Queen for the album News of the World. It was released as a single paired with We Will Rock You, and the two songs together became anthems at sports events around the world. Mercury said he wanted to write something that a football crowd could sing along with. The song begins with a slow piano and builds to a defiant chorus with layered harmonies. It reached the top ten in the United States and Britain. Its triumphant lyrics, which speak of winning but also of hardship along the way, made it a favourite for celebrations by victorious teams.
