Creation of OpenVMS

25 October 1977

OpenVMS is a multi-user operating system developed by the Digital Equipment Corporation, first released as VAX/VMS together with the VAX-11/780 computer in 1977, with a team led by Dave Cutler, who later led the development of Windows NT at Microsoft. It was known for reliability, security and clustering, which linked several computers so that they appeared as one and could keep running if one failed. It was widely used in banks, factories, hospitals and stock exchanges. It was renamed OpenVMS in the 1990s as it added standards from Unix, and was ported to other processors. After Compaq and Hewlett-Packard it is now maintained by VMS Software Inc.
