Founding of European Border and Coast Guard Agency

26 October 2004

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, better known by its former name Frontex, is an agency of the European Union headquartered in Warsaw, which helps member states to manage the external borders of the Schengen area. It was established by an EU regulation and began work in 2005 with a small staff, coordinating joint operations by national border guards, risk analysis and training. In 2016, in the wake of the refugee crisis of the previous year, its powers were greatly expanded, and it was given a standing corps of its own border guards. The agency has been criticized by human rights organizations and investigators over alleged involvement in or knowledge of illegal pushbacks of migrants at the borders.
