Release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

26 October 2004

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North for the PlayStation 2, and later released on other platforms. It is set in 1992 in a fictional US state based on California and Nevada, and follows Carl Johnson, a gang member who returns to Los Santos after his mother's death. The game allowed players to roam three cities and the countryside between them, and added role-playing elements such as customisable appearance and fitness. It sold tens of millions of copies and became one of the best-selling video games of all time, though it provoked controversy over its violence and the hidden Hot Coffee content.
