Founding of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

1991

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is an international financial institution created to help the former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe move toward market economies after the Cold War. The idea was promoted by French president Francois Mitterrand after the revolutions of 1989, and the bank has its headquarters in London. It lends mainly to private companies, supports reforms and invests in sectors such as energy, infrastructure and banking, with a stated commitment to democracy and pluralism. Its shareholders are dozens of countries and institutions, including the European Union. Over time it has widened its range beyond Europe to Central Asia, the southern and eastern Mediterranean and parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
