Founding of International Hockey Federation

7 January 1924

The International Hockey Federation, known as FIH from its French name, is the world governing body of field hockey, founded in Paris by a group of national associations that wished to bring the sport into the Olympic movement. Field hockey had been played at the 1908 Olympics, but was dropped in 1912, partly because of disagreements between the national bodies, and the creation of the federation helped to bring the sport back for the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. The federation organises the Hockey World Cup, the Olympic tournaments and the Pro League, and sets the rules of the game. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has over a hundred member associations.
