The Club of Rome is a think tank and network of scientists, economists, business leaders and former politicians, founded by the Italian industrialist Aurelio Peccei and the Scottish scientist Alexander King, who met in Rome to discuss global problems that were too complex for national governments. It became famous with its 1972 report The Limits to Growth, which used computer modelling developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to explore the consequences of continued exponential growth in population and resource use on a finite planet. The report sold millions of copies, and was widely discussed and criticised. The Club is now based in Winterthur in Switzerland, and it continues to publish reports on sustainability.
