Death of Martin Luther King Jr.

4 April 1968

Martin Luther King Jr. died on 4 April 1968 in St. Joseph's Hospital, aged 39. An American Baptist minister and civil rights leader, King emerged as a national figure through the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955 and 1956 and became president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Inspired by Gandhi and Christian teaching, he led nonviolent campaigns against racial segregation, such as the protests in Birmingham and the March on Washington in 1963, where he gave his I Have a Dream speech. His work helped bring about the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Later he spoke against poverty and the Vietnam War. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968.
