The Algerian War was fought between France and the National Liberation Front, the FLN, which sought independence for Algeria, then ruled as part of France and home to a large European settler population. It began with a series of attacks across the country on All Saints' Day. The conflict involved guerrilla warfare, urban bombings, and a brutal French counterinsurgency that included torture, as in the Battle of Algiers. The war brought down the Fourth Republic and returned Charles de Gaulle to power in 1958. After the Evian Accords, Algeria became independent in 1962, and hundreds of thousands of settlers and Algerians who had fought with France left for France.
