Founding of Adobe

28 February 1982

Adobe was founded by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, who had worked at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and left to commercialise a page description language they had developed, called PostScript. PostScript became the standard for printing and helped to start the desktop publishing revolution, along with the Apple Macintosh and the LaserWriter. The company went on to create graphic design software such as Illustrator and Photoshop, and the Portable Document Format, or PDF, introduced with Acrobat. In the 2010s, Adobe moved to a subscription model with the Creative Cloud. It is headquartered in San Jose, California, and its software is widely used in design, photography and film.
