Founding of Olympic Council of Asia

1982

The Olympic Council of Asia is the governing body of sport in Asia, and it brings together the national Olympic committees of the continent. It replaced the Asian Games Federation, which had organised the Asian Games since the first games in New Delhi, and took on responsibility for running the Asian Games, the Asian Winter Games and other continental events. It is headquartered in Kuwait, and for decades it was led by members of the Kuwaiti royal family. The Council is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as the continental association for Asia, and its member committees range from Japan and China to the smaller states of the Gulf and Central Asia.
