Establishment of Los Glaciares National Park

11 May 1937

Los Glaciares National Park is a large protected area in Santa Cruz Province, in Argentine Patagonia, on the border with Chile. It takes its name from the numerous glaciers that descend from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the largest ice mass in the Southern Hemisphere outside Antarctica. The best known is the Perito Moreno Glacier, whose front is regularly seen breaking off into Lake Argentino and which has been unusually stable compared with most glaciers in the world. The park also includes the granite peaks of Mount Fitz Roy, a favourite of climbers and hikers near the village of El Chalten. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
